An Advent Reflection to Draw You Into Wonder

I have a small, beautiful book that sends my imagination soaring. It’s not a book of art or fairy tales or even poetry. It’s a physics book. Can you believe it? Over and over again the concept of Time comes up. Do you ever think about time? If not, I invite you to think about it now, this very day. This very hour. This very minute. Ha! I’ve already got you thinking about it!

Time is a constant part of our experience. We can’t see outside of it. We can only see through it. Like glasses we can’t take off. But God…the maker of all things—is not bound by time. He’s the creator of beginnings and endings. He pierced right through time when He came into our world as a baby. He submitted Himself to living in each moment, always moving forward one second at a time, as a mere mortal. What a sacrifice! He could have skipped the hard moments and made the happy ones go on and on. What a powerful love—that He would humble Himself that way!

When I talk to The Lord, I am talking to the One who sees and understands all things. He understands the small, beautiful physics book that sends my mind soaring. He understands the principals beneath the ones I strain to grasp but always marvel at in that book. He understands the layers of truth of which even Einstein only saw the merest glimmers. How marvelous is our God!

John 1:1-4—“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

Psalm 90:4—“A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.”

Blessings to you all (and many moments of wonder) during this Advent season!
