The Sneaky Seamstress

I Always liked the idea of a colorful wedding dress. As a little kid I imagined wearing one the color of my favorite Ice cream, Daiquiri Ice. But as I got older it seemed like a bad idea to choose a wedding dress inspired entirely by ice cream. Still, I liked the idea of something with a little bit of color. So when I found this one fairytale dress that had silk rose buds in varying shades of soft color, I knew this was the dress for me.

I still remember the day I went for my final fitting. It must have been pretty close to my wedding day, though I don’t remember exactly how close. I was standing on some kind of raised platform and a woman was pinning my dress so that it would fit me just right. Both my mother and mother-in law to be were there and my fiancé had sent flowers to the dress shop. A sweet memory. I remember glancing at the woman pinning my dress. She’d said something nice and I was responding to her. When I saw her face, it surprised me. She looked…sneaky.

A few weeks later I was walking along on my way to class (I was in my last semester of college) and I had a nagging feeling that something had happened to my dress. I drove home for the weekend and asked my mom about it. “Have you heard anything from the dress shop about my dress? I’ve had this weird feeling that something’s happened to it.” My mom  looked startled and didn’t respond immediately. Clearly she knew something. “Something HAS happened to it, hasn’t it?” I said, seeing the look on her face.  “Yes,” she said, sounding surprised. “It was stolen, wasn’t it?” I asked. “Yes!” she said, totally taken aback. “By that sneaky seamstress!” I declared. “Yes!” My mom answered.

So, as weird as it was that my wedding dress was stolen by a sneaky seamstress I think it was even weirder that I guessed it was stolen by a sneaky seamstress. And it does make for an interesting story, doesn’t it?

There wasn’t time to order a new dress before the wedding but it still worked out fine. Another girl who was about my size had ordered the same dress and had called off her wedding, so I got her dress (I do hope it worked out good for her too!) The dress had the pretty, silk rose buds but they were all one color—pale pink. Good enough.
