The Night Rabbit

If you’ve ever read my picture books then you’re already familiar with The Night Rabbit—the sleek, black rabbit who emerges from the shadows and leaves a sparkling trail of hope and light wherever he goes. I remember the cloudy day when he first hopped through my imagination. I could see him there in the shadows of my mind—his eyes shone like stars. I felt so comforted by the idea of him.

I had been praying about problems I was powerless to fix. You know the kind? The sort that ties your stomach up in knots. In my mind I could see a little girl, tangled in yarn, and that starry-eyed rabbit hopping from the shadows to guide her to freedom.

I’ve heard it said you should write what you know. I know Jesus so I write about Him.

I write about Him over and over again. And I paint stories of Him too. Often I see Him in other people’s stories, even when they didn’t mean to include Him. And I hear Him in songs even when they weren’t written about Him. Does that happen to you too? I find He shows up everywhere.

Blessings to you this week. May the God of all hope stir your imagination and draw your gaze ever upward!
